The Alpha Centauri disco ball collection takes its name from the planetary system closest to Earth. Designed by Studio MTX under the guidance of its artistic director Mathieu Bassée, its eye-catching look hides a real tour de force as it is a totally empty volume. Its stricking design sits somewhere between George Lucas’ Black Star and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes. Not only does it reflect light when illuminated by spotlights, but it’s intricated see-through surface is a strong decorative artefact, as hypnotic as it is elegant. Founded in the late 1930s, Montex Haute Couture embroidery workshop created Studio MTX in 2013 to open up a new field of expression in embroidery: interior design. By moving embroidery from clothing into space, a new savoir-faire emerges, drawing on the vocabulary of traditional embroidery to develop its own language. The thread becomes a cable, riveting borders on couture, the sequin evolves into a thermolacquered aluminium module. The Studio offers decorators and interior designers hitherto unseen materials born from the unique combination of techniques from different fields of the applied arts including embroidery, weaving, tapestry and leatherwork.
