Celebrating Women in Design

Stories Editor's Pick Celebrating Women in Design

For a long time, design & architecture were predominantly male-dominated fields. Not anymore. Let’s celebrate the female talents who are reshaping the world of design, proudly presented on Invisible Collection.

Reflecting on the history of design and architecture in the 20th century, it’s evident that there were as many super-talented women as men. Unfortunately, they did not receive the attention they deserved. One example that speaks louder than a thousand words: who remembers that the iconic Barcelona armchair was a collaboration between Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich? A brilliant designer and close collaborator of the German architect, Reich was among many women who significantly contributed to the Bauhaus, alongside Anni Albers, Gunta Stölzl, and Marianne Brandt, to name just a few. These unsung heroines of modern design paved the way, often overshadowed by their famous male counterparts, making major contributions yet receiving little recognition. They all had the talent, vision, and commitment but never received the acknowledgment they deserved.

Fast forward to the 21st century: a societal shift is taking place in our industry, as we strive to build a more inclusive ecosystem. This starts with acknowledging the unsung heroines of the past, celebrating their work, recognizing their influence, and ensuring they are remembered. Their ideas live on through a new generation of female designers who are unafraid to be heard and seen, who don’t just dream about success, but they work for it and achieve it. As a female-led brand, we understand the challenges that women still face and the steep road ahead. In our decision-making, we always consider the desire to correct gender imbalances and biases whenever possible.

We are proud that 50% of the star designers on our platform are super-talented women, each with a distinct signature style. Following in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, from Charlotte Perriand, Suzanne Agron, Eileen Gray, and Florence Knoll to Lina Bo Bardi, Ray Eames, and Gae Aulenti, to name but a few, these women are playing a critical role in reshaping contemporary design as we know it.

Their success is our success.
