Uchronia

Founded by Julien Sebban, Uchronia is a multidisciplinary architecture and design collective based in Paris. Its name draws from a neologism coined by Charles de Renouvier, a 19th century French philosopher who brought forward the concept of alternative worlds, a sort of unbridled “what if” … Known for its singular ethos, Uchronia has delivered countless projects defined by striking atmospheres and unparalleled craftsmanship. Each space – encompassing private homes, restaurants, shops and exhibition venues – is designed with the “what if” factor in mind and all the exciting adventures that could take place in it.

Background

Founded by Julien Sebban, Uchronia is a multidisciplinary architecture and design collective based in Paris. Its name draws from a neologism coined by Charles de Renouvier, a 19th century French philosopher who brought forward the concept of alternative worlds, a sort of unbridled “what if” … Known for its singular ethos, Uchronia has delivered countless projects defined by striking atmospheres and unparalleled craftsmanship. Each space – encompassing private homes, restaurants, shops and exhibition venues- is designed with the “what if” factor in mind and all the exciting adventures that could take place in it. After attending the AA School of Architecture in London, Julien spent time in Sydney, Johannesburg, New York and Buenos Aires, before settling in Paris where he asked likeminded designers, artists and craftsmen to join him in his quest for a “post-architectural” world… Uchronia collaborates with fashion brands – Jour/Né, Nina Ricci- and with famed jeweller and grillz maker Dolly Cohen. In addition, the studio has created two must-see restaurants, one inside Galeries Lafayette and the other at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Uchronia Wave, its debut furniture collection, has already made quite a splash.

Signature Style

Colourful, playful, and unexpected. Uchronia strikes the perfect balance between French savoir-faire and design-thinking outside the box. All the projects are defined by a precise sense of light and colour, of shapes and volumes. Mixing eclectic materials – from humble bricks to noble Raku ceramics- the studio calls upon the best artisans and artists to reinvent the space.

Showstoppers

Uchronia Wave, the studio’s debut line of furniture. Highlights from the collection include the Peanut III table and the Sunny II chair. The dining table features an hour-glass-shaped top that is as eye-catching as it is fit for conviviality. Its unique shape allows the guest to see and interact with each and every one at the table. Moreover, the top is a feat of technical prowess as it is made of many-colored panels of Raku ceramic. The Sunny II chair is a playful remedy to ‘social distancing’ inspired by the old-fashioned Confidente Chair. The flower shaped seats and undulating back in burl poplar exemplify the studio’s experimental take on form, texture, pattern and colour.
