Beyond its historic re-editions, Ecart Design continues to create its own pieces guided by the same philosophy of ‘luxe pauvre’ — noble simplicity achieved through honest materials, careful proportion and the refusal of superfluous ornament, so that each object earns its place in a room through clarity of form rather than decoration.
The Traversante Coffee Table takes its name from the French word for ‘crossing through,’ a nod to the way its top moves between two textures in a single continuous gesture — one half left smooth, the other gouged by hand, as though the wood itself were caught mid-transformation. It is a quietly sculptural statement from Ecart, the Paris house Andrée Putman founded in 1978 to carry the discipline of French Modernism forward.
Made from oak finished with a matt varnish, the table plays smooth against textured surfaces so that light catches each differently across the tabletop, giving the piece a shifting, tactile presence. Bespoke woods are available upon request, so the contrast can be recut in a species suited to any interior.

Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
