Since Etel Carmona founded her São Paulo workshop, Etel has built its reputation on a singular mission: safeguarding and re-editing the furniture of Brazil’s great modernist minds, José Zanine Caldas, Gregori Warchavchik and Oscar Niemeyer among them, while also producing new work with architects like Arthur de Mattos Casas and Isay Weinfeld. Now led by Lissa Carmona, the house remains committed to native, FSC-certified Brazilian hardwoods, having been the first in the country to earn that distinction.
The Toto Tea Trolley, designed by architect and filmmaker Isay Weinfeld, reinvents the classic drinks trolley with a wink: it takes its name from the leather strap fixed to its side, which, much like a leash, can be pulled to walk the piece from room to room as though it were a puppy trotting alongside its owner. Built in natural Freijó and a mix of native Brazilian woods, the trolley has traveled well beyond its original brief, exhibited at the Vienna Center of Architecture alongside Weinfeld’s celebrated buildings.

ETEL’s design collection comprises one century of Brazilian furniture. With its pioneering re-edition work, ETEL brings back graceful designs of the modern Brazilian production, discovered only recently, and now considered as one of the most relevant worldwide for that period. Pieces characterised by skilful handiwork and the use of exquisite materials were created by architects and artists intent on unveiling the local culture, under the influence of the international avant-garde. This retrieval is based on a strict methodology, faithfulness to the originals, and intensive collaboration with the institutes and families that represent each creator’s oeuvre. The collection includes pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, Giuseppe Scapinelli, among others.
