Pierre Chareau belonged to a generation of French designers who saw no contradiction between craft and industry, and Potence Lamp is a quiet demonstration of that belief. He paired the raw honesty of hand-worked metal and stone with materials chosen for how they behaved under light, treating each piece as a small architectural gesture rather than a decorative afterthought.
Named for its potence, the pivoting arm borrowed from industrial lighting, the Potence lamp lets its two quarter-round alabaster plates slide and swing from right to left on a base of blackened forged metal, so the light can be aimed exactly where it is needed. It is a compact demonstration of Chareau’s engineering instincts, offered in veined white or veined brown alabaster.
