Based in the Apuan Alps, Mmairo controls every step of production in-house, from quarry extraction to finished object, collaborating with international designers, architects and artists on furniture and objects.

“There is no such thing as black, but many shades of black,” said Yves Saint Laurent, and the Piero Vase, designed by Arthur Arbesser for Mmairo, seems to rise directly out of that variety of color and non-color. Arbesser, who moves between fashion, art and architecture, treats the Carrara atelier’s stone, sourced from a house whose name derives from the ancient Greek marmairo, meaning to shine, as a material capable of infinite tonal nuance rather than flat, single-note darkness.

The vase’s form owes its shape to the elemental materials available to Mmairo, and can be realized in Nero Marquinia, Bianco Michelangelo, Rosso Levanto, Arabescato Vagli Filo Rosso, Verde Guatemala or Blu Sodalite marble, each stone lending the same silhouette an entirely different mood. Available with bespoke dimensions and finishes, the Piero Vase is produced from quarry to finished object within Mmairo’s own workshops in the Apuan Alps.
