French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance learned the discipline of form early, watching his sculptor father work before founding his own studio, Neonata. His work for storied houses including Hermès, Baccarat and Saint-Louis established him as one of France’s most instinctively sculptural designers, and since settling in Lisbon he has pursued an increasingly hands-on relationship with marble, carving and assembling it into small-batch pieces where each edition carries the trace of the artisan’s hand.
The Cil sofa, limited to 12 pieces, extends the armchair’s charismatic minimalism onto a longer American walnut frame, shown here upholstered in Bruder’s Oum fabric for a soft, enveloping surface. The same single supple line that frames the armchair runs the full length of the sofa, lightly grounding its volume while keeping the silhouette visually light. Wood, fabric and form are conceived to communicate within one unified, gentle visual vocabulary rather than competing for attention.
Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer who explores a wide range of disciplines and materials, which merge into a distinctive body of work. Born in the south of France in 1974, he followed in his father’s footsteps, by studying sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art, then earning his design diploma at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In addition to his spectacular private and commercial projects –including an iconic chalet in the Alps – Noé creates exceptional pieces of furniture in very limited editions. After discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Portugal and the country’s rich craft traditions, he has launched Made In Situ, a design studio that pays tribute to Portuguese storied artistry.
