Victoria Magniant designed the Daiku Bench S from her Paris studio, where she pairs French cabinetmakers and glassblowers with an eye trained on sculptors like Noguchi and Hepworth. For Magniant, choosing a material is also a way of defending a culture, a skill and an ethic of craftsmanship.

Made from solid, stained ash in the finish pictured, with walnut and oak also on offer, the Daiku Bench S is designed like a piece of calligraphy, its tinted surface built up like layered watercolour to stay rich in pigment while still letting the natural grain show through. Because the wood is left solid rather than veneered, the bench continues to move very slightly with heat and humidity long after it leaves the workshop, a living quality Magniant treats as a mark of authenticity rather than a flaw.

This creation is crafted from solid wood, a natural material that naturally expands, contracts and cracks with temperature and humidity changes. Variations in grain, colour, and texture are inherent and natural. These natural changes are a sign of authenticity, and part of what makes each piece unique.
