Background
OUD is an architecture and design studio based in Paris, founded by Marie-Sarah Burckel and Josselin Berteloot. The name chosen by the duo is polysemous: OUD refers simultaneously to a type of wood, a perfume essence, and a musical instrument, thus expressing the idea that material genrates emotion. Marie-Sarah graduated from the Paris-Belleville and Venice schools of architecture. Through her years of practice at Wilmotte & Associés, she developed a sensitive yet rigorous approach to design, particularly within existing contexts. After studying architecture and film, Josselin joined Agence Christian de Portzamparc in 2007, where he worked on major cultural projects, developing a command of design across all scales.
Signature Style
OUD designs and realises private and public living spaces. Like the architects of the 1950s who inspire them — Luis Barragan, Carlo Scarpa, and Charlotte Perriand — Marie-Sarah Burckel and Josselin Berteloot design interiors down to the custom furniture. OUD does not follow trends, exploring instead the dialogue between past and present. They create places and objects that exist outside of time, giving the impression of having always been there. While privileging the clarity of plans and volumes, OUD enriches its projects with objects and materials sourced from elsewhere, each carrying a singular identity. Informed by travel since childhood, they work to inscribe each project with a diversity of aesthetic codes and references drawn from their experiences.
Showstoppers
A furniture collection whose sophistication evokes the imagination of Art Deco at its peak, through the use of rare materials, rich textures, and timeless forms. The studio has been awarded the André Arfvidson Prize, the Grand Architecture Prize of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
