Since 1958, the Manufacture de Tapis de Bourgogne has worked from its ateliers in Moroges, at the heart of Burgundy, where hand-knotting and hand-tufting are practiced as living crafts rather than industrial processes. Recognised as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, the manufacture has lent its rare know-how to designers from Andrée Putman to Philippe Starck, weaving each rug thread by thread with the patience of a discipline passed down through generations of artisans.
Part of Elsa Barbillon’s Dreams collection for the Manufacture de Tapis de Bourgogne, the Caldeira Rug takes its name and its concentric, cartographic motif from the caldera — the collapsed chamber of an extinct volcano, filled over time with still water. Hand-knotted and hand-tufted in wool and silk with a cut and loop pile, the beige colourway renders that geological memory as a soft topography underfoot, part of a series that draws on Aboriginal traditions of mapping land through pattern and repetition.
