With the Alta Lounge Chair Wood, Etel continues its role as the official re-editor of Oscar Niemeyer’s furniture, the small but fiercely inventive body of work the architect of Brasília and the United Nations Headquarters created alongside his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer. Each re-edition is handcrafted and bears the seal of the Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, certifying its authenticity.
Designed in 1971, this was the very first piece of furniture Niemeyer created with his daughter, its rounded seat counterbalanced by an elegant curve running from base to backrest. Shown here in Barcelona Preto leather on black lacquered wooden legs, though fabric upholstery can also be requested, the chair carries a sculptural quality rare for something so comfortable.
Alongside his public buildings, Oscar Niemeyer designed countless pieces of furniture, driven by the need to fix “the problem with furniture arrangements”. The great master thought that beautiful modernist and contemporary architecture was often diminished by the presence of inadequate pieces of furniture… Together with his daughter, Anna Maria, he created many iconic designs including the Rio rocking chair, the Marquesa bench and the Alta armchair. Over time, he launched ON, a line of furniture comprising a desk, a sofa and an armchair. Free from the strict rules of functionalism, he injected sensuality and “Brasilidade” into his work finding beauty through asymmetry and curves.
