Karen Chekerdjian is a Lebanese-Armenian designer based in Beirut.
The Totem Portoro Side Table gives Karen Chekerdjian’s ritual object its most theatrical material. The Lebanese-Armenian designer, shaped by her training in Milan under Massimo Morozzi and her years at EDRA before opening her own studio in Beirut, conceived Totem around matter and colour, form and line, its cylindrical base and interchangeable tip aimed at ground or sky standing as a single object caught between ancestral power and futuristic dynamism.
This limited-edition piece is carved from Nero Portoro, the black marble prized for its dramatic gold veining, often called the gold among marbles, and polished to a high shine by Mmairo, the Carrara atelier controlling extraction through manufacture in-house since 2016. The gold threading catches light along the totem’s length, turning what could be a simple column into the divine inspiration of a design object.
Karen Chekerdjian’s creations are nourished by craftsmanship, tradition and the cultural skills of Lebanon, her home country. Today her workshop produces collections of furniture, objects, and jewellery all under the “Series by Karen Chekerdjian” brand – limited edition objects as well as Spatial Design. Her unique collaboration with regional craftsmen, has allowed her to lay the foundations for Lebanese design. Her work transforms and reinterprets the origins of her country, bringing forth a strong contemporary character. The dynamic dialogue between design and craftsmanship has become her signature. Her strong style, without embellishment, produces pieces that are sharp-edged, masculine, almost Brutalist, with a highly elegant and enigmatic presence.
