For her Inside Out and Totem collections, Chekerdjian works with Mmairo, the Carrara marble atelier that controls every stage of production, from quarry extraction to finished object, in-house.
The Totem Onyx Side Table takes Karen Chekerdjian’s ritual object and casts it in light. The Lebanese-Armenian designer, trained in Milan under Massimo Morozzi and seasoned at EDRA before founding her own studio in Beirut, built the Totem series on matter and colour, form and line, and here the cylindrical base with its interchangeable tip aimed at ground or sky finds its most luminous expression, ancestral power rendered almost weightless.
Carved from White Onyx and finished to a high polish, the piece is produced with Mmairo, the Carrara atelier that has controlled extraction through manufacture in-house since 2016. Onyx’s natural translucency means the stone seems to hold its own inner glow, so the divine inspiration Chekerdjian describes in Totem becomes literal each time light passes through the marble.
MMairo designs and creates high quality marble objects in Carrara, the world’s marble capital, where they were established in 2016. The products are made using the highest quality marbles, hand finished by skilled local artisans and with a high market positioning.
