The Torii Chair by Philippe Hurel x TMJ Design Studio is a homage to the Torii, Japanese portals that lead the way to the entrance of Shinto temples, marking the border between the sacred and profane worlds. Resulting from ancestral craftsmanship, they are built using complex assemblies. Outside of their religious context, these architectural elements—real sculptures erected towards the sky—are often compared to Land Art. Inspired by these traditional constructions, the Torii chair is a composition based on the motif of the cylinder: the first, solid, constitutes the crosspiece of the backrest; the second, hollowed out, serves as a resting place; and the third, in the form of a cross-section, is intended for the seat. The entire piece is adorned with a fabric splashed with blue and set on a base of anthracite oak.Â
