Since 1958, the Manufacture de Tapis de Bourgogne has worked from its ateliers in Moroges, at the heart of Burgundy, where hand-knotting and hand-tufting are practiced as living crafts rather than industrial processes. Recognised as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, the manufacture has lent its rare know-how to designers from Andrée Putman to Philippe Starck, weaving each rug thread by thread with the patience of a discipline passed down through generations of artisans.
The rectangular Guilin Rug carries Terence Mesguich’s karst-inspired design for TMJ Design Studio into a more architectural format, its 80% wool and 20% silk cut and loop pile still built to evoke the layered, misted peaks of southern China’s Guilin landscape. Hand-tufted by the Manufacture de Tapis de Bourgogne in light beige, bronze-beige, off-white or grey, the textured surface shifts subtly under changing light, a quality the designer — trained alongside Romeo Sozzi at Promemoria before founding his own studio in 2011 — has long favoured over flat, static pattern.
