Founded in São Paulo by Etel Carmona and now led by her daughter Lissa Carmona, Etel is the only design house authorized to re-edit some of Brazil’s most significant modernist furniture, from José Zanine Caldas and Gregori Warchavchik to Oscar Niemeyer and contemporary architects such as Arthur de Mattos Casas and Isay Weinfeld. Every piece leaving its São Paulo workshop is built from FSC-certified native hardwoods, making Etel the first furniture maker in Brazil to earn that certification.
The Tupi Nightstand, designed by Arthur de Mattos Casas and named after Brazil’s indigenous Tupi peoples, hides its practicality behind quiet ceremony: a sliding drawer and a tray topped with five silk-straw object holders turn the simple act of emptying one’s pockets at night into a small daily ritual. Set on slender legs of steel finished in a special brown coating, and crafted in washed Freijó wood with two concealed power outlets, the piece proves that Casas’s architectural discipline extends even to the smallest corner of the bedroom.
ETEL’s design collection comprises one century of Brazilian furniture. With its pioneering re-edition work, ETEL brings back graceful designs of the modern Brazilian production, discovered only recently, and now considered as one of the most relevant worldwide for that period. Pieces characterised by skilful handiwork and the use of exquisite materials were created by architects and artists intent on unveiling the local culture, under the influence of the international avant-garde. This retrieval is based on a strict methodology, faithfulness to the originals, and intensive collaboration with the institutes and families that represent each creator’s oeuvre. The collection includes pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, Giuseppe Scapinelli, among others.
