Founded by Goya Gallagher and named for Nut, the Egyptian goddess who personifies the sky, Anut Cairo builds its table linens and pottery around the country’s living artisan communities rather than a purely decorative idea of Egyptian style. Its embroidered linens are hand-worked in Cairo, its glazed earthenware hand-painted by potters in the Fayoum village of Tunis, and its woven bedspreads made by textile artisans in Akhmim and Sohag along the Nile. The house’s embroidery training school gives local women a skill they can practice from home, turning each hand-stitched piece into part of a wider, ongoing project.

The Nile Lotus Placemat repeats the same lotus motif drawn from antique Ottoman samplers in linen and hand embroidery, part of a design language shaped by the 1920s explosion of Egyptian-inspired decoration in the West. Its double-sided, hand-worked surface means the placemat can be set either face up, depending on the light and the table it dresses.
