The Marquesa Bench belongs to the furniture line Oscar Niemeyer — the Brazilian modernist architect behind Brasília and the United Nations Headquarters — designed with his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer during his years of political exile in Paris. Frustrated that 1970s furniture failed to match the architecture of its time, Niemeyer set out to design his own, carrying the same sensual curves into three dimensions of wood and metal.

Originally designed in 1974, the bench pairs black lacquered wood with woven rattan, its scrolled silhouette recalling the classic scroll bench even as it carries Niemeyer’s own sinuous, architectural line. Every re-edition bears an embedded seal from the Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, certifying it against the original 1974 design.
