This collection, designed by GarcĂ© & Dimofski for The Invisible Collection, does not reproduce Doucet’s furniture but reimagines his world, naming each piece after the writers, painters and collaborators who moved through his life and his two legendary studios on Avenue du Bois and rue Saint-James. It is a portrait of a collector assembled in furniture rather than facts.
The Lautrec Rug carries the name of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the painter of Belle Époque Paris nightlife whose career unfolded in the very decades Jacques Doucet was rising as the city’s most celebrated couturier and beginning to assemble his collection. GarcĂ© & Dimofski give the rug a hand-knotted construction in wool, bamboo and linen, a mix of fibres as varied as the Parisian world Lautrec painted.
The blend of materials produces a surface with subtle shifts in texture and sheen underfoot, wool’s density against bamboo’s cooler gloss and linen’s matte grain, an effect closer to a painted canvas read by touch than a single flat weave. Bespoke dimensions, shapes and colours are available for every interior.
Few men have left such an indelible mark on the imaginations of art patrons and aesthetes. Jacques Doucet was the archetype of the modern collector, with a love of culture as vast as his curiosity and flair for the new. As a couturier, he mentored Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet while dressing celebrities and heiresses. As a collector, he amassed the most legendary trove of rarities and masterpieces from the 18th century to the avant-garde, including Picasso, Klee, Matisse, and de Chirico, while commissioning furniture from Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain, who decorated his last home, the fabled Studio Saint James. Now, his legacy lives on through a furniture collection available exclusively through Invisible Collection.
