As an artist-in-residence at Villa Medici in Rome and recipient of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation Prize, Hugo Drubay embarked on an ambitious project to revisit the Medici Vase. This emblematic piece of neo-Attic art, currently on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, is a monumental ancient marble krater celebrated for its intricate bas-relief depicting a Bacchic procession. Regarded as an exemplary model of classical art, the vase epitomizes the grandeur of Greco-Roman craftsmanship and served as a key inspiration during the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods, influencing artists, architects, and designers who sought to emulate classical aesthetics.

Originally acquired by the Medici family and displayed in their villa until the late 18th century, the vase has a storied history. Hugo Drubay’s vision reimagines the Medici Vase in its original home, digitally sculpted, engraved, and crafted in plaster with gold leaf gilding, creating a modern tribute to this iconic artefact.
