Karen Chekerdjian is a Lebanese-Armenian designer based in Beirut.
The Inside Out Nero Marquina Bowl by Karen Chekerdjian is not simply a fruit basket carved in stone. Trained in Milan under Massimo Morozzi and shaped by years at EDRA before founding her own Beirut studio, Chekerdjian designs objects that refuse to sit quietly on a table; here, an essential silhouette and unapologetically classical lines turn a humble container into the centrepiece of a room, proof that a single sharp gesture in marble can carry as much weight as an entire piece of furniture.
Carved from Nero Marquina, the dense black marble prized for its fine white veining, the bowl is realised with Mmairo, the Carrara atelier that has controlled every stage of production, from quarry to finished object, since 2016. Because it is designed as an interchangeable top for the Inside Out Table, this same silhouette can migrate from sideboard to dining table, letting one material define an entirely different ritual each time it is set down.
Karen Chekerdjian’s creations are nourished by craftsmanship, tradition and the cultural skills of Lebanon, her home country. Today her workshop produces collections of furniture, objects, and jewellery all under the “Series by Karen Chekerdjian” brand – limited edition objects as well as Spatial Design. Her unique collaboration with regional craftsmen, has allowed her to lay the foundations for Lebanese design. Her work transforms and reinterprets the origins of her country, bringing forth a strong contemporary character. The dynamic dialogue between design and craftsmanship has become her signature. Her strong style, without embellishment, produces pieces that are sharp-edged, masculine, almost Brutalist, with a highly elegant and enigmatic presence.
