Background
Founded in 1993 by Fatima De La Espada and Luis De Oliveira, partners in both life and work, De La Espada has evolved over three decades from a small workshop into a globally recognised furniture brand, chosen for some of the most ambitious architectural projects worldwide. Each product is made at their solar-powered production facility on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where they specialise in generations-old woodworking traditions and upholstery. Their deep engagement with Portuguese craft combined with continuous experimentation within their research centre ensures that the original spirit of the workshop endures.
Signature Style
De La Espada combines artisanal furniture making savoir faire with rigorous, research-based contemporary design. Reflected within each of their products is a reverence for the natural beauty of noble materials, a deep commitment to heritage, and the pursuit of experimentation; an engineering of past and future. The brand looks outward and forward, collaborating with progressive thinkers internationally from different design disciplines to introduce new layers of thought and refinement. Each partner contributes to the brand’s design language, shaping a world that has become distinctively its own—interdisciplinary, contemplative, and culturally enriched.
Showstoppers
Their portfolio of iconic and timeless pieces includes designs by their in-house design studio, De La Espada Atelier, and by great figures in the world of international design including Neri&Hu, Anthony Guerrée, and Luca Nichetto, among others.
De La Espada products reflect diverse perspectives with a unifying commitment to creativity, materiality, and craft. Sela Chairs by Luca Nichetto combine leading design with generations of craft knowledge in the fields of woodworking, saddlery, and upholstery; Cursa Chairs by Anthony Guerrée merge the fields of art and design in bold, fully upholstered forms with complex curves; and Twenty-Five Desk by De La Espada Atelier showcases the virtuosity of De La Espada woodworkers in an intricately detailed design with a modern flexibility that adds another layer of functionality.
