The Paris house Haymann Editions practices its own version of the French “ensemblier” tradition, curating rather than authoring: founder David Haymann selects a rotating cast of designers — Toni Grilo, Charles Kalpakian, David & Nicolas among them — and pairs their ideas with French and Italian ateliers skilled in marble, solid wood, leather and steel, so that every collection speaks a shared, disciplined visual language despite its many hands.
In the walnut-toned Noce stain, the Dartagnan chair softens its solid ash frame with warmth, the leather saddle seat that Toni Grilo shaped like a swing sitting at the centre of a design built on apparent simplicity and hidden precision. Around a dining table, the warm tone keeps the chairs feeling approachable without losing the exactness that runs through the whole collection.
After working for many years in IT and retail, David Haymann switched to his secret passion: design. In 2012 he launched Haymann Editions, with the purpose of becoming an “éditeur de mobilier”, a very French notion of commissioning from a designer a collection of original furniture pieces and manufacture them. The first collection designed by Toni Grilo, a Brazilian designer based in Portugal, became an instant success. Since then, Haymann Editions has developed several new collaborations with an eclectic roaster of up and coming designers including the duo Dan Yeffet and Lucie Koldova, the Lebanese design studio David & Nicolas, Sebastien Herkner, and Charles Kalpakian.
